Disability Commissioner Tasmania is a new independent body established on 1 July 2025 under the Disability Rights, Inclusion and safeguarding Act 2024.
The Disability Commissioner Tasmania works to protect and promote the rights of people with disability across Tasmania.
While the Act gives the Disability Commissioner a broad range of powers, their work mainly focuses on two key areas:
- Driving systemic change by supporting and monitoring Disability Inclusion Plans that document strategies that help government agencies remove barriers, improve access, and uphold disability rights.
- Receiving and investigating reports of violence, abuse, neglect, coercion, and exploitation involving people with a disability.
The Disability Commissioner Tasmania also educates the community, advises government, and listens to the voices of people with disability to help shape a more inclusive Tasmania.
